Climate Zones - The U.S. has a variety of climates. Humid Temperate climates can be found all throughout the southeast. In the northeast and Midwest, we find Humid-Cold Climates while arid and semi-arid climates can be found in western states such as Arizona and Nevada. The state of California is unique in that it has four types of climate zones including: humid temperate, humid equatorial, dry summer, and highlands.

Land Cover - The share size of the U.S. makes it home to many types of land cover. Much of the east coast of the United States is covered in mixed forest. In the Midwest, many croplands can be found. In the west, states like Colorado, Arizona, and Nevada have many open shrubland's, while woodland grasslands can be found in the southern states.

Population Density - Much of the U.S. population is settled along the east coast. This is because the original 13 colonies were set up along the east coast. New York City, in the northeast, has the largest population of any city in the U.S. As populations expanded westward, large cities sprung up in the mid-west such as Chicago and St. Louis and became important industrial centers. The gold rush brought in the mid-1800's brought many people out west. Today, Los Angeles is the West Coasts most populated city.

Lights at Night - This map depicts a satellite view of what the U.S. looks like at night. The brightest lights can be found along the east coast, the south, and the mid-west where the major centers of population are located. There are almost no lights found in areas of the west where the Rockie Mountains and some of the countries major deserts can be found.
